GoPro is an American technology company formed in 2002 by Nick Woodman.
This company produced its own action cameras and they develop it’s own mobile apps, and video editing software.
GoPro is based in San Mateo, California.
Now its name is GoPro, Inc but in former times it is known by Woodman Labs, Inc.
This company deals with technology, videography, and the consumer electronics industry.
Nick founded this company in 2002 when he was 18 years old.
GoPro served their items/ products in worldwide.
Its products are Action Camera, Video Editing Software, and a mobile app.
The company developed a quadcopter drone, karma which was released in October 2016. But in 2018, Karma was discontinued due to some reasons. And they were back to their way of manufacturing action cameras.
How Nick got the idea of business?
Nick Woodman get this idea from their surfing trip to Australia. On that trip, he was thinking of high-quality action photos but he was unable to take good quality action photos. Because amateur photographs could not get enough close enough or buy good equipment at a reasonable price.
Origin of ‘GoPro’ name
The ‘GoPro’ name came about as Woodman and his surfing friends all aspired to become professional surfers as ‘going pro’. It was the ultimate goal and the only way to be filmed in the water at that time.
Woodman raised a portion of his initial capital by selling bead and shell belts for under US$20 from his VW van. Later, fashionable camera straps. He also received over $230,000 from his parents to invest in the business.
In 2004, he sold his first camera which used a 35mm film.
Digital still and the video camera was later introduced.
As of 2014, a fixed-lens HD video camera with a wide 170-degree lens was available; two or more can be paired to create 360 videos.

- On June 4, 2014, the company announced his first president to Tony Bates who was a former Microsoft executive.
- In 2016, Gopro was partnered with a periscope for live streaming.
- In November 2016, the company announced it was laying off an additional 200 employees in an effort to reduce costs.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, GoPro laid off more than 20 percent of its workforce – over 200 employees.
- On March 30, 2011, GoPro acquired CineForm. The acquisition included the CineForm 444 video codec used in the film Slumdog Millionaire.
- On April 28, 2015, GoPro acquired Kolor, a spherical media and virtual reality startup based in Chambéry, France. Kolor were developers of Autopano, Autopano Video, and Panotour. But it was no longer with GoPro.
- On February 29, 2016, GoPro spent $105 million and acquired two start-ups—Stupeflix and Memory—for their video editing tools Replay and Splice.
In March 2020, GoPro acquired the stabilization software company, ReelSteady.

- Hero Cameras:
Woodman was working for two years for their first action camera after founding the company.
Then he launched his first camera in 2004, which covered 35mm films at San Diego’s Action Sports Retailer trade show.
In the first year
GoPro sold $150,000 worth of products. In 2006 the company introduced its first Digital HERO, with 10-second video capability, and generated $800,000 in revenue.
The following year GoPro sales quadrupled to $3.4 million.
In 2014, the company was selling the HERO3+ in editions of different colors.
This was capable of filming in 16:9 aspect ratio, supporting 4K UHD video, and 12 MP still photographs.
HERO4 was introduced on September 24, 2014.
In 2018, he came out with Hero7 Black with a new feature of “Time wrap”.
- GoPro Karma and Gopro Karma Grip:
Firstly, GoPro karma was the consumer’s drone. The Karma was released along with newer models of the HERO5.
After a few customers complained about power failure during operation, GoPro recalled Karma drones and gave customers full refunds.
- GoPro 360° cameras
In November 2017, GoPro launched the Fusion camera. It was an omnidirectional camera is capable of recording 360-degree footage.
GoPro produces various mounting accessories for its cameras including a 3-way mount, suction cup, chest harness, jaws-type flexible clamp, dog harness, surfing mount, etc.
- Video Editing:
The company developed GoPro Studio, simple video editing software to edit camera footage.
GoPro has more than 36 million followers across all social media platforms.
Disney and Carnegie Mellon University figured out how to use GoPros as motion capture tools, allowing use technology to be utilized out of the studio.
GoPro has a ton of Hollywood credits.
Its extremely high streaming-rate makes it indispensable as a POV camera.
This has been used in Need for Speed and Captain Phillips.
- From 2011 to 2012, GoPro went from making up six percent of the camcorder market share to almost 22%.
